Knotty by Nature Aerial Troupe Logo

The Goal: To create a logo for a performance troupe that is visually readable as an aerial silk pretzel with a simple silhouette. The Challenges: Aerial arts have many distinct and recognizable silhouettes, but a pretzel made of silk is not something that currently exists that people instantly associate with this category of performance. The Approach: Originally the logo was just going to be the aerial silk pretzel, but it was clear that without context it wouldn't be recognizable as related to circus arts/aerial performance. I made the decision to add other figures using more recognizable apparatuses to give the logo a more instantly understandable visual.

Creature Feature Posters

The Goal: To create eye-catching promotional material for a local burlesque show optimized for social media ads and physical posters. The Challenges: There was a lot of shifting information during the process of creating these, and that meant there were many edits that had to be made in the process. It was also an interesting problem to figure out creating 12 individual performer posters that fit their provided headshots while also matching the theme and full art poster. The Approach: Leaning into the campiness and source material, I wanted these fliers to showcase the performers as a part of the art, like actors in a B movie.

Character Illustration Commission

The Goal: To bring the client's DnD character to life for use in his campaign as a profile picture and also as a memento. The Challenges: The client had a specific feel in mind from the beginning and knew what features he wanted the character to have, but struggled to find the words to explain the fine details and poses that he wanted. The Approach: Because the client clearly cared deeply about this character and had a goal for the end result that he couldn't quite describe, we spent quite a lot of time in the early stages sharing reference images to figure out details. I also sent several rounds of rough sketches to make sure the pose I went with fit the characterization he was imagining. Once I had the roughs fully approved I went on to polish and render the illustration.

"Worm" fan book cover

Created by the infamous online serial writer, Wildbow - "Worm" has remained a favorite story of mine for many years. Since there's no telling when it will get an official print release, I took it upon myself to create a version of the volume 1 cover myself. The dark protagonist of the story is a girl with the ability to control insects. Her growing powers often lead to moral gray areas and massive harm, so I illustrated a deceased looking wasp with pointillism to capture her extreme level of detail and to foreshadow the destruction to come.

Starting from a vague description, Aubrey helped build the vision I had in my mind. She's communicative and willing to make alterations, and I love the final product!
